Is Baby Powder Safe?
You may have heard that the current recommendation by medical experts is to NOT use baby powder products containing talcum powder (cornstarch-based powders are okay). Johnson's Baby Powder's main ingredient is Talc (which is talcum powder).

From what I have researched online, reports are citing possible links between talc and pulmonary issues, lung cancer, skin cancer and ovarian cancer. I found this report from CHEST (American College of Chest Physicians) on two documented cases of infant deaths from inhaling baby powder (while the circumstances with these cases are extreme - the babies faces were covered with baby powder - the danger is there).

With all this negativity surrounding talc, I'm surprised by several things: that Johnson's still has not addressed this and labels its product as "safe"; that the product is being purchased at all (which shows a lack of awareness surrounding talc dangers); that Health Canada or the US Department of Health hasn't banned talc in personal hygiene products.

For myself, with all the existing information about talc, I feel that to expose my child to talc is an unnecessary risk that is potentially dangerous.

Without more awareness and public information about the dangers of talc, older generations like my mom are unconvinced of the potential dangers. Please inform other moms about talc and baby powder!
